About Minneriya
Minneriya National Park surrounds the Minneriya tank, a reservoir traditionally attributed to King Mahasena in the third century. In the dry season, as water elsewhere disappears, elephants come to graze on the fresh grass of its shores. At its peak this is known as “The Gathering”, one of the largest congregations of Asian elephants anywhere.
What you might see
- Herds of wild elephants, often with young calves
- Spotted deer, monkeys and water buffalo
- Crocodiles and monitor lizards near the water
- Painted storks, pelicans, eagles and many other birds
Elephants move between Minneriya, Kaudulla and the surrounding forests through the year, so drivers usually choose the park with the best recent sightings on the day.
Your safari
Safaris are in open 4×4 jeeps with a driver who knows the park.
- Bring binoculars, a hat, sun protection and a light layer.
- Stay in the vehicle and keep noise down near the animals.
- Never feed wildlife, and don’t ask your driver to get too close. Good drivers give elephants space.
