Bird Watching

Early-morning walks around reservoirs, paddy fields and forest edges, in one of Sri Lanka’s richest areas for birds.

Birds around Sigiriya

The mix of forest, open scrub, paddy fields and ancient reservoirs around Sigiriya attracts a wide variety of birds. Sri Lanka has more than thirty species found nowhere else, and migrant birds arrive from the north in the cooler months.

What you might see

  • Kingfishers, including the bright white-throated kingfisher
  • Bee-eaters hawking for insects from bare branches
  • Peafowl, hornbills and parakeets
  • Herons, egrets, storks and cormorants on the water
  • Birds of prey such as serpent eagles

Your walk

The best activity is in the first hours after sunrise.

  • Wear neutral colours and comfortable shoes.
  • Bring binoculars and a camera with a zoom if you have them.
  • Walk quietly. You’ll see and hear far more.
