Polonnaruwa Guided Tour

Explore Sri Lanka’s medieval royal capital with a guide: palaces, temples and some of the island’s finest rock carvings.

About Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa became the island’s capital after Anuradhapura and flourished in the 11th and 12th centuries, above all under King Parakramabahu I, who also built the vast Parakrama Samudra reservoir. The ruins of the city are spread over a large area and are inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Highlights

  • The Royal Palace and the Council Chamber
  • The Quadrangle, with the circular Vatadage and its carved stairways
  • The tall brick walls of the Lankatilaka image house
  • Gal Vihara: seated, standing and reclining Buddhas cut from a single granite face
  • The great reservoir, especially in the late afternoon

Your guided tour

A guide brings the city’s history to life and helps you make the most of a large site. Many visitors cover the ruins by car or bicycle between stops.

  • Cover shoulders and knees; shoes and hats come off at sacred sites, so socks help on hot stone.
  • Don’t pose for photos with your back to a Buddha statue.
  • Bring water, sun protection and a hat.
