How to Get from Colombo or the Airport to Sigiriya

Sigiriya has no railway station and no commercial airport, so most journeys end by road. Here are your options from Bandaranaike International Airport and Colombo, from the most comfortable to the cheapest.

The short answer

For most visitors, a private car with a driver is the best option. It’s door to door, you can stop on the way, and it usually takes around 3.5 to 4.5 hours from the airport. Public transport is much cheaper but slower, with at least one change. Whatever you choose, let us know your arrival time so we can be ready for you.

By private car and driver

Most travellers arrive in Sri Lanka at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) near Negombo, north of Colombo. From there, drivers usually head inland via Kurunegala and Dambulla. Depending on the route your driver picks, part of the journey may use the Central Expressway. From Colombo city, allow a little longer for traffic getting out of town.

  • Agree the price in advance, including any expressway tolls and waiting time if your flight is delayed.
  • Break the journey if you like. The Dambulla Cave Temple is right on the route, so you can visit on the way.
  • Consider a driver for your whole trip. Many visitors hire one driver for several days across the Cultural Triangle and hill country.

By taxi app

Ride-hailing apps such as PickMe and Uber operate in Sri Lanka, and many travellers use them for long-distance trips out of Colombo. Check the fare estimate in the app before you confirm. Note that availability around Sigiriya can be limited, so for your onward journey it is often easier to arrange a driver through the villa.

By train

There is no station at Sigiriya. Trains from Colombo Fort on the line towards Trincomalee and Batticaloa stop at Habarana, and from there you continue by tuk-tuk or taxi. The journey is slow, and the trains get crowded, but it’s a memorable way to travel if you’re not in a hurry. Reserved seats can sell out, so book early where possible. Timetables change, so check current services before you plan around them.

By bus

The cheapest option is the bus. Frequent services run from Colombo to Dambulla, where you change to a local bus or tuk-tuk for the last stretch to Sigiriya. Expect a long, bumpy and often crowded ride, with limited space for large bags. It’s best for light packers on a tight budget.

Driving yourself

Self-drive car hire is possible, but most visitors choose a driver. Foreign licences need to be recognised locally before you drive. The rules have changed in the past, so check the current requirements with your rental company or the Automobile Association of Ceylon before you travel. Roads are busy with buses, tuk-tuks, cyclists and animals, and overtaking habits take some getting used to. If you do drive, allow plenty of time and avoid the last stretch after dark.

Luggage and comfort

Large suitcases are easy in a private car. They are awkward on trains and buses, where luggage space is limited and you may need to lift bags on and off yourself. If you are travelling by public transport, a backpack or a small case makes the journey much easier. On long drives, ask your driver to stop for tea or a meal on the way. There are plenty of roadside cafés and rest stops along the route.

From Kandy, Trincomalee and elsewhere

Coming from elsewhere on the island? Kandy is about 2.5 to 3 hours by road via Dambulla, with regular buses as well as private cars. Trincomalee on the east coast is a similar distance. Dambulla town and Habarana are each about 30 minutes away, and both have good onward bus connections.

Domestic charter flights and air taxis sometimes serve a small airstrip near Sigiriya. If time is short and budget isn’t, it’s worth checking with the operators.

  • Sort out cash and data at the airport. ATMs and SIM-card counters are in the arrivals hall.
  • Avoid driving after dark if you’re driving yourself. Rural roads are unlit, and around Habarana, wild elephants sometimes cross the road.
