Anuradhapura Guided Tour

A guided day in the island’s first great capital, a sacred city of giant stupas, ancient ponds and the revered Bodhi tree.

About Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura was the island’s capital for well over a thousand years, and remains one of Buddhism’s most important pilgrimage sites. The sacred city, with its monasteries, stupas and reservoirs, is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Highlights

  • Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred fig tree said to have grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment
  • The great white dome of Ruwanwelisaya
  • Jetavanaramaya and Abhayagiri, among the largest brick stupas ever built
  • The carved twin ponds of Kuttam Pokuna
  • Rock carvings at Isurumuniya

Your guided tour

The sites are spread out, so a guide and driver make the day far easier.

  • White or light-coloured clothing is customary at the sacred sites; cover shoulders and knees.
  • Shoes and hats come off at temples. Socks help on hot stone.
  • It’s a long day: start early and bring water.
